… AMG vows to bridge Ondo’s 2m registered voter turnout gap

A coalition of labour leaders in Ondo State under the aegis of Labour for Good Governance have vowed to back President Bola Tinubu for a second term in the 2027 general elections, citing what they described as improved workers’ welfare, infrastructure development as well as the administration’s courage in removing fuel subsidy.

The endorsement, which took place during a programme organised by the Asiwaju Mandate Group (AMG) in Akure, the Ondo State capital, saw veteran labour figures from the state declare their support for Tinubu, describing his policies as beneficial to workers and ordinary Nigerians.

Speaking at the event, the President of Labour for Good Governance in Ondo State and former Vice President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Solomon Adelegan, described the Tinubu administration as the most worker-friendly in recent history.

Adelegan, who is also a former president of the Amalgamated Union, noted that this is the first time in history that Ondo State is producing three ministers, and workers in the country have not had it so good as under the present administration.

He commended the Ministry of Interior, headed by Honourable Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, noting that for the first time, Nigerians no longer queue for passports, stressing that
“Within a week or two weeks your passport will be ready, unlike in the past, which will take months or years.

“The President and his cabinet have been able to bring it down to the lowest minimum. When we also look at the ongoing infrastructure and road construction, no government in Nigeria has done well as President Tinubu,” Adelegan said.

Also speaking, the former Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Ondo State, Comrade Bosede Daramola, said the Tinubu administration had introduced measures that changed the economic situation of many Nigerians.

According to her, the benefits of the fuel subsidy removal had created broader opportunities for citizens to participate in the economy, adding that in the time past only a few people enjoyed the subsidy, but now state governors have enough funds to pay salaries and meet their obligations.

“State governors have enough to pay salaries. Any state governor that is unable to pay salaries now should be held responsible by the labour in that state because they have enough money to pay their gratuities,” she said.

She also commended the president’s security approach and the infrastructural developments taking place across the country, adding that the achievements had informed the decision to support his re-election.

On his part, the Director-General of the Asiwaju Mandate Group, Olumuyiwa Asagunla, who stated that the endorsement was organic and not sponsored, stated that the labour leaders came willingly to endorse the President due to the good work of the administration.

“These people have been coming willingly. That’s just the joy of it because they have seen the good work of Asiwaju himself and then they appreciate what he’s doing at the federal level,” Asagunla said.

He disclosed that the Minister of Interior, Honourable Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has been the one sponsoring the series of endorsements, which have also included people living with disabilities and other various groups.

Asagunla emphasised that the state has about two million registered voters, with between 400,000 and 500,000 voters typically casting ballots in elections, and the group is working to ensure increased participation through voter education.

“We’ve been going out to tell people that it’s their right to elect anybody or to get anybody that is not performing well out of office. It’s their right to re-elect or elect somebody that is doing well,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tinubu was presented with an award of exemplary leadership, with a similar honour presented in recognition of the contributions of the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who was hailed for facilitating mobilisation of grassroots support in the state.

The labour group pledged its support for the president’s re-election bid, promising to mobilise votes for him across the 18 local council areas of Ondo State.
