The Primary Health Centre (PHC) Ujariyo in Kebbi State, which was constructed to save the lives of thousands of residents in the community and its environs, including Asarara and Gidan Yange, now poses a threat to the lives of the residents.
The PHC is marred by caving ceiling, leaking roofs, cracked walls, limited medical supplies and rusted metal beds.
The horrifying condition of the PHC was revealed by a civil society organisation (CSO), MonITNG, after a recent visit to the community. The CSO revealed the outcome of their visit in a statement shared on X.
“This is the Primary Health Centre (PHC) Ujariyo in Kebbi State, a facility meant to serve as a lifeline for over 1,500 residents from Ujariyo, Asarara, and Gidan Yange. But instead of safety and care, the centre now stands as a danger to the very lives it was built to protect.
“The ceiling is caving in, walls are severely cracked, and parts of the building are held up by sticks. Yet, this is where mothers bring their newborns, where the sick seek hope, and where elders come for relief,” the statement read in part.
The CSO noted that women who go into the PHC to deliver babies fear the crumbling walls, adding that children admitted to the PHC lie on rusted metal beds under leaking roofs. The organisation described the PHC as a building that could fall apart at any moment.
According to MonITNG, the residents of these communities often embrace courage and seek medical care at the PHC because they have no alternative. The health workers at the PHC are faced with the challenge of attending to thousands of residents with limited health supplies.
The CSO also appealed to the Kebbi State Government to rebuild the PHC.
“The people of Ujariyo are not asking for much, just the right to live, to be treated with dignity, and to access healthcare in a safe space. The Kebbi State Government must act now. Rebuild PHC Ujariyo. Equip it. Staff it. Protect it. These lives matter. The silence must end now,” it added.
