A Nigerian health informatics and healthcare analytics expert, Aishat Salami, has called for Africa to take a leadership role in advancing data-driven healthcare systems, arguing that the continent possesses unique opportunities to shape the future of global health through digital innovation, health intelligence, and evidence-based decision-making.
Salami, a specialist in Health Informatics and Healthcare Analytics, made the call while speaking on the growing importance of healthcare data analytics in improving health outcomes, strengthening health systems, and enabling governments and healthcare institutions to make more informed clinical and operational decisions.
According to her, the rapid expansion of electronic health records, digital health platforms, disease surveillance systems, and healthcare information technologies presents Africa with an unprecedented opportunity to become a global leader in health data innovation.
She noted that while many countries continue to struggle with fragmented healthcare data, Africa has the opportunity to build modern, integrated, and analytics-driven healthcare systems capable of improving patient care, reducing operational inefficiencies, and supporting more effective public health interventions.
Reflecting on her professional work, Salami explained that one of the greatest challenges facing healthcare organizations is not the absence of data but the inability to convert complex healthcare information into actionable intelligence for clinicians, healthcare executives, and policymakers.
She observed that healthcare institutions generate enormous volumes of clinical, financial, operational, and patient information every day, yet much of this information remains underutilized because organizations often lack structured analytical frameworks capable of transforming raw data into strategic decisions.
According to her, improving healthcare requires more than digitization; it requires intelligent data governance, standardized analytics, performance measurement, and continuous evaluation of healthcare systems.
She emphasized that healthcare analytics enables organizations to identify patterns in patient outcomes, monitor service quality, optimize resource utilization, improve regulatory compliance, reduce avoidable costs, and strengthen organizational performance.

She also highlighted the increasing role of artificial intelligence, predictive analytics, and business intelligence technologies in transforming modern healthcare delivery.

Salami also encouraged governments to prioritize health informatics as a strategic component of national healthcare development rather than viewing it solely as an information technology initiative.
