The Hyperledger Meetup attracted participants, including software developers, entrepreneurs, IT professionals, and students. The event featured keynote speeches, panel discussions, and Q&A sessions led by blockchain experts. Attendees had the opportunity to delve into Hyperledger’s suite of blockchain frameworks, including Hyperledger Fabric, Hyperledger Besu, and Hyperledger Indy, and explore their applications in industries such as finance, supply chain, healthcare, and governance.
One of the highlights of the event was a keynote address by Hyperledger National community leader in blockchain technology and the lead speaker at the event, Uchenna Ogbonna, who emphasized the importance of open-source collaboration in driving innovation. “Hyperledger is not just a blockchain technology; it’s a movement. By fostering open-source projects that focus on real world issues, we empower communities to build solutions that address real-world challenges,” said Uchenna. He also discussed on how businesses in Nigeria and Africa at large can adopt this technology. Kelly Nnorom, a guest speaker at the event also addressed the potential disruption the blockchain technology will bring on the digital marketing discipline and how it can be leveraged.
The meetup served as a platform for networking and knowledge sharing, fostering a sense of community among Nigeria’s blockchain enthusiasts. Participants exchanged ideas, shared experiences, and discussed strategies for leveraging blockchain technology to solve local problems. The event also featured a “Blockchain Idea Building Session” where people were split in small teams and competed to develop innovative ideas that will benefit from using Hyperledger frameworks. The winners were presented with Hyperledger “SWAG”.
A software developer and attendee, Mr. Juwon, shared his excitement: “This meetup has been an eye-opener. I’ve learned so much about Hyperledger and how it can be used to create transparent and efficient systems. The best part is connecting with like-minded individuals who are passionate about blockchain.”
The Hyperledger Meetup also highlighted the growing contributions to open source blockchain projects. Nigerian developers shared their interests in the Hyperledger frameworks, demonstrating how these tools could be used to address local challenges. For example, one team presented and shared an idea on how a blockchain-based solution can be used for tracking agricultural supply chains, ensuring transparency and reducing post-harvest losses.
National community leader and lead organiser of the event, Mr. Uchenna Ogbonna, emphasized the importance of open-source collaboration: “Nigeria has a wealth of talent, and by contributing to Hyperledger projects, we can position ourselves as leaders in the global blockchain space.” He also shared his participation on his role to the contribution to the Hyperledger Open-Source initiative as he is a member of the Hyperledger Supply Chain SIG (Special Interest Group) which is a global group and community whose focus is to discuss, research, and develop solutions for specific areas of interest. SIGs are made up of industry professionals who work together to advance knowledge and open-source technology. This meetup is just the beginning of what we can achieve together.”
The successful hosting of the Hyperledger Meetup in Lagos underscores Nigeria’s potential to become a blockchain innovation hub in Africa. By embracing open source blockchain technology, Nigeria can address critical challenges in sectors such as finance, healthcare, supply chain and governance which will drive economic growth and development.
The meetup also highlighted the role of blockchain in promoting financial inclusion. With over 36% of Nigeria’s adult population unbanked, blockchain-based solutions can provide access to financial services for underserved communities. Additionally, the transparency and security offered by Hyperledger frameworks can help combat corruption and build trust in public institutions.
The first Hyperledger Meetup in Lagos has set the stage for future collaborations and innovations in Nigeria’s blockchain ecosystem. Organisers announced plans to develop and grow the Hyperledger Nigeria Chapter, which will serve as a hub for ongoing education, collaboration, and project development. The chapter will also work closely with global Hyperledger communities to drive the adoption of blockchain technology in Nigeria and beyond. Uchenna Ogbonna also expressed his thanks to the Mr. David Boswell, a Senior Director at Hyperledger, who is responsible for the growth and expansion of Hyperledger communities globally for all his help and support; in his words “I want to thank David for all the support on hosting this meet up which ensured that the event was successful.”
The first Hyperledger Meetup in Lagos was a resounding success, showcasing Nigeria’s growing influence in the global blockchain space. By fostering community building and contributing to open-source projects, the event has laid the foundation for a brighter future powered by blockchain technology. As Nigeria continues to embrace innovation, events like this will play a crucial role in driving economic growth, promoting transparency, and empowering communities to build a better tomorrow.
