Law associations to hold conference on practice of arbitration

THE International Law Association (ILA) Nigerian branch, in association with the Lagos Court of Arbitration (LCA) is organizing a conference with the theme: “Nigeria’s Compliance with Global Arbitration Practices”, on the 29th of this month, at the International Centre for Arbitration & ADR, Lekki, Lagos.

The event is expected to create awareness on the challenges being experience in the practice of arbitration in Nigeria.
It will also highlight any required law reform including the positive implication of enacting a Federal arbitration bill, that will meet current international standards and the repeal of obsolete state arbitration laws.

And will also create a platform to critically assess the application in Nigeria of key international arbitration instruments which include, the UNCITRAL model law and the 1958 new York convention on the recognition and enforcement of foreign arbitral awards in relation to the perception of Nigeria as a favoured venue for arbitration activities.

Also the event will be in a debate format and will feature Dr. Fabian Ajogwu SAN and Dr. Adewale Olawoyin SAN, debating the question whether or not Nigeria can be regarded as a favourable venue for arbitration activities.

This will be followed by a round table discussion by representative of stakeholders to discuss the various issues raised and proffer solution on the way forward.LCA was established in pursuant to the law 2009 with the function of promoting Nigeria as a place for the settlement of disputes by arbitration and other alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.

And was borne out of the vision to develop Lagos State as the hub for arbitration activities in West Africa.
