A child rights group, Advocates for Children and Vulnerable Persons Network (ACVPN), has called on the Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Lawal Pedro, to urgently investigate what it described as the “questionable release” and alleged mishandling of several child sexual abuse cases by a state prosecutor.
The group is asking the Attorney General and the Lagos State Ministry of Justice to investigate the activities of the prosecutor attached to Magistrate Court 1, Agbowa, in Ikorodu.
The group alleged that the prosecutor’s actions are undermining justice in multiple cases involving minors.
ACVPN co-founder and Chief Operating Officer, Mr Ebenezer Omejalile, while speaking with journalists, referenced the reported release of a suspect, who was allegedly caught sexually abusing a 15-year-old girl in Ikorodu and subsequently charged in court under relevant provisions of the Lagos State Criminal Law in October 2025.
He said the suspect was released without the knowledge of the complainant, raising concerns about due process and accountability.
The organisation also cited a separate case involving a “notorious land grabber,” who was accused of subjecting his daughter to sexual abuse.
The case, filed in 2023 at Magistrate Court 1, Agbowa, was allegedly stalled after the suspect’s release under what ACVPN termed “false pretences,” with the prosecutor reportedly describing the matter as a “family issue” in court.
In another case highlighted by the group, a sports presenter was charged in November 2025 with alleged assault by penetration involving a minor.
The group faulted the decision to grant him bail in January 2026 while awaiting legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP), despite what it described as “glaring medical evidence.”
ACVPN further alleged attempts to obstruct justice, including reported pressure on the victim’s family and an unauthorised second medical examination conducted on the minor.
The group described this as “secondary abuse” and called for the parents to be treated as hostile witnesses for allegedly failing to cooperate with court proceedings.
Additionally, the petition referenced an ongoing case involving a 44-year-old man, accused of defiling and impregnating his stepdaughter in the Ikotun area of Lagos.
The group alleged that community leaders and other individuals had attempted to intimidate the victim’s family into withdrawing the case, including threats and inducements.
ACVPN warned that such developments could erode public trust in the justice system and embolden perpetrators of sexual violence against children if not urgently addressed.
The group, therefore, urged the Attorney General to launch a thorough investigation into the conduct of the prosecutors involved, ensure accountability, and safeguard the integrity of ongoing cases.
It also called for immediate intervention to protect victims and witnesses from intimidation, insisting that justice must not only be done but seen to be done in all cases involving vulnerable persons.
