New NJI administrator pledges to overhaul institute

Hon. Justice Babatunde Adeniran Adejumo, who was recently appointed as the new Administrator of the National Judicial Institute (NJI), has resumed office with a pledge to overhaul the institute.

Justice Adejumo, who became the ninth head of the Institute, assumed office following the expiry of his predecessor, Hon. Justice Salisu G. Abdullahi.

His appointment was approved by the Board of Governors of the NJI, chaired by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun, GCON, at a meeting held on July 3, 2025. The appointment took effect on August 1, 2025.

At a welcome reception in Abuja, the Director of Administration, Mr. Osmond A. Otobo, praised Justice Adejumo as a seasoned judicial administrator with a track record of reforms and accomplishments during his tenure as President of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria.

Otobo assured the new Administrator of the staff’s loyalty and commitment to productivity, while praising the CJN for appointing “a great judicial technocrat.”

In his remarks, Justice Adejumo expressed gratitude for the warm reception and noted that he is no stranger to the NJI, having engaged with the Institute since 1993 through his work with various Chief Justices of Nigeria.

He pledged to replicate the reforms he led at the Industrial Court, promote merit-based leadership, and uphold discipline and transparency.

He further committed to overhauling NJI’s training modules, improving staff welfare, and modernising the Institute’s information technology and library systems to enhance global access and standards.

Justice Adejumo brings decades of experience and extensive institutional knowledge to the NJI and is expected to lead transformative efforts aimed at improving judicial education and strengthening the ethical and professional standards of the Nigerian judiciary.
