NHRC seeks upward review of N4.5b budgetary allocation to commission

Tony Ojukwu
Tony Ojukwu (SAN), executive secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has decried low budgetary allocation to the commission.

According to him, the commission gets a paltry budget allocation of N4.5 billion yearly, which he said is grossly inadequate to meet its mandates.

Ojukwu stated that the commission receives a minimum of two million complaints yearly and if they were to investigate a case for N5, 000, the commission would require N2 billion to investigate complaints yearly, apart from other running costs.

The senior Advocate also lamented that most of the offices occupied by the commission are on rented structures, which may expose it to vagaries of politics and interested landlords.

The Executive Secretary praised the media for their continued dedication to sport-lighting human rights issues in Nigeria.

He said: “Together, we can raise awareness on human rights issues, and spark meaningful conversations that can lead to effective positive change. Your role as the Fourth Estate is pivotal in making this a reality.”

The Commission, while expressing commitment to its mandate of promoting, protecting, and enforcing human rights in the country, said it will remain committed to the vital role it plays in ensuring that the rights of every individual are respected and protected, regardless of their background, beliefs or circumstances.

“The Commission is here to serve as a beacon of hope, a refuge for the oppressed, and a watchdog against any encroachment on human rights,” Ojukwu emphasised.
