The prestigious Johannesburg Business School came alive on Naija Day 2024 as the Congress of Nigerian Students at the University of Johannesburg (CONSUJ) organized an event filled with a celebration of Leadership and Excellence and a focus on the importance of mental health. This year’s celebration was exceptional as it aligned with Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day and celebrated several individuals who have showcased exceptional leadership in various spheres of endeavour. The event also highlighted the role of Nigerian students and professionals in promoting positive change in both their home country and across the African continent.

The event held on Friday 11 October 2024 began with a heartfelt welcome address by Mr. A.T. Baker, the President of CONSUJ who spoke passionately about the significance of the occasion. Mr. Baker set the stage for a day that would honour Nigeria’s independence while also looking forward to the contributions Nigerians in the diaspora can make toward the country’s future. In his words, Mr Baker said, “We gather today not only to celebrate the 64th anniversary of Nigeria’s independence but also to reflect on our responsibilities as Nigerians living abroad. Naija Day symbolizes our collective commitment to using our talents and opportunities here in South Africa to support the development of our beloved Nigeria.
The day was marked by dynamic cultural performances, a thrilling quiz on Nigeria’s history, insightful discussions on self-development, and an educational lecture on mental health. With hundreds of attendees, including community leaders such as the Nigerian Citizens in South Africa (NICASA) president- Pst. Frank Onyekwelu, Dr Emeka Ugwu – President Nigeria Medical Forum in SA and academics like Prof. Abejide Ade-Ibijola, Prof. Lawrence Obokoh, Prof. Nnamdi Nwulu and many other Nigerian expatriates. The event’s keynote address was delivered by Pst. Frank Onyekwelu – President of Nigerian Citizens in South Africa (NICASA). His address focused on Nigeria’s pivotal role in shaping Africa’s future, urging the Nigerian youth to be at the forefront of progress and innovation. He stated that Nigerian’s young population are not just inheritors of the nation—they are its architects. Through leadership, innovation, and collaboration, we can create a better Nigeria. He discussed the importance of education, entrepreneurship, and innovation in addressing Nigeria’s challenges, urging attendees to think critically about their role as changemakers.
He also highlighted examples of young Nigerians leading in various sectors and emphasized the need for diaspora Nigerians to use their skills and resources to contribute to national development.
The cultural performances that followed captured the essence of Nigeria’s rich heritage and showcased the unity found in the country’s diversity. The audience was treated to stunning displays of traditional dances from the Yoruba and Igbo ethnic groups, with each performance offering a glimpse into Nigeria’s vibrant cultural life. These performances were not only entertaining but also a powerful reminder of the cultural wealth that defines Nigeria. The event celebrated the unity among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups and the pride Nigerians share in their cultural heritage. A highlight of the day’s activities was the Trivial Quiz, which saw participants compete in answering questions about Nigeria’s history, culture, and geography. The quiz engaged attendees in an educational yet fun way, allowing them to test their knowledge and learn more about their homeland. Prizes were awarded to the winning individuals, adding to the excitement and reinforcing the educational aspect of the event.

One of the most impactful moments of the day was a lecture on maintaining mental health delivered by Dr. Emeka Ugwu, who was represented by the NANSSA president, Comrade AbdulRasaq. The speaker spoke about the importance of mental health, considering the pressures faced by students and young professionals in the diaspora. He provided practical advice on how attendees could manage stress and maintain good mental health while pursuing their studies and careers. The lecture emphasized the importance of seeking help when needed, building strong support systems, and taking time for self-care.
A key part of the day’s events was the Leadership and Service Awards ceremony, which recognized individuals for their outstanding contributions to various fields. The awards honoured leaders, professionals, and students who have demonstrated excellence and a commitment to serving their communities. The invited guests were honoured with leadership awards for their contributions to education, business, and healthcare. Some of the dignitaries who were awarded include: Prof. Abejide Ade-Ibijola. Prof. Lawrence Oboko, Prof. Nnamdi Nwulu, Amb. Umar I. Bashir- the Consul General to South Africa (SA), Amb. Emmanuel Oguntuyi – Deputy Consul General to SA, Dr. Kingsley Ukoba, Dr. Patrick Imoisili amongst many others. Awards were also presented to students in recognition of their academic excellence. The awards ceremony was a highlight of the day, celebrating individuals who have demonstrated leadership, service, and excellence in their respective fields.
As the Naija Day 2024 came to a close, the overwhelming sentiment was one of pride and unity, as attendees were also treated to various Nigerian Cuisines. In her closing remarks, Esan, Oluwadamilola- the General Secretary of CONSUJ appreciated all the attendees and reiterated the importance of remaining connected to their Nigerian roots while contributing to the global community. She stated that Nigerians in diaspora should continue to work together, support each other, and celebrate our achievements. The chairman of the organizing committee, Mr. Olayinka Lawani was full of praise to the sponsors and everyone for taking their time to attend. Many in attendance expressed their appreciation for the event, particularly its focus on both celebrating Nigeria’s past and looking forward to its future. Naija Day 2024 was a resounding success, not only in celebrating Nigeria’s independence but in reinforcing the strength, resilience, and unity of the Nigerian community in South Africa.
