Medical Guild provides free screening, surgeries ahead of 2015 AGM, conference

The frontline body of government doctors in Lagos State, the Medical Guild, will begin medical screening and surgeries to correct ailments in the health conditions of residents of Lagos State, starting with residents in Ikorodu Local Government area, from November 16 to 17 and 23 to 24, 2015.

The Chairman of Medical Guild, Dr. Biyi Kufo, a Special Grade Consultant Ophthalmologist at the General Hospital, Lagos Island, addressing associate doctors during preparation for the programme, at their secretariat in Idiroko, Lagos, recently, said: “As a prelude to the Guild’s annual general meeting (AGM) scheduled for November 23 and 24, 2015 in Lagos, we consider it is appropriate to employ our skills at minimizing health problems suffered by residents of Lagos State.

“We are therefore giving free screening to test and ascertain the people’s exact health problems. With the nature of the forthcoming project, we will perform surgeries when necessary. Our focus is to tackle ailments that include diabetes, surgical condition such as hernia and uterine fibroids, urinary tract infection, malaria, and eye conditions such as cataract and glaucoma.”

The Chairman explained that the first phase of their health project in 2015 is the medical screening and surgeries; then proceed to the second phase that includes surgeries from November 23 to 24, with the Guild’s 2015 AGM and scientific conference, taking place in Lagos on November 25, 2015.

Kufo said: “A key aspect of the Medical Guild’s AGM and scientific conference is the desire to work with the private sector, especially pharmaceutical companies that appreciate the importance of ensuring that quality and authentic drugs are made available to hospitals through which the government dispenses medicines that are effective for treating illnesses or diseases that can otherwise claim people’s lives.”

“The Medical Guild is therefore gearing (AGM). In the process of such participation, they will be opportuned to demonstrate efficacy of their drugs especially through exhibitions and clinical presentations – channels through which key government officials from the Ministry of Health, Lagos State will be present to gain access and firsthand experience of drugs marketed by such companies.”

The chairman further stressed that a major reason behind the Guild’s desire to integrate the private sector into its health projects is recognition of the professional input and approach adopted by pharmaceutical companies, especially their culture of infusing a competitive spirit in dispensing services to their clients and customers.
