Worgu BomsThe Rivers State branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA has suspended the former commissioner of justice and Attorney-General of Rivers State, Worgu Boms from all activities of the bar.

Spokesman of the Port Harcourt branch of the NBA, Angus Chukwuka said the attorney-general was suspended after a general meeting of the bar in Port Harcourt.

He said: “NBA took the decision at about 3pm on Thursday, during the general meeting presided over by the Port Harcourt branch Chairman, Dennis Okwamkpan, held at the Ministry of Justice, Port Harcourt.

“The former commissioner of Justice and Attorney-General was suspended over his insensitivity to the plight of lawyers as well as his untenable role of conduct in the continued closure of courts in Rivers State.

“He has been suspended from all NBA activities for the time being. The bar in arriving at its resolution was divided along these lines: 92 people voted in favour of his suspension; 18 voted against while 20 abstained”.

Chukwuka regretted that the association noted that the commissioner’s roles exposed both litigants, lawyers and magistrates to untold hardship due to the closure of courts in the state since June 9, 2014.

All courts under the jurisdiction of the Rivers State High Court have been closed to judges, judicial workers, litigants and the public following the political crisis that engulfed the state last year.

He said attempts by the state judiciary workers to resume along with their counterparts after a nationwide strike by judiciary workers under the aegis of Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, JUSUN, was called off was thwarted when dynamites went off in the premise of three high courts in Port Harcourt, Ahoada and Omoku, under the Rivers State High Court jurisdiction.

He stated further that less-privileged children, who could have had will for custody and adoption, missed the opportunity due to the closure of court.

Also, he noted: “Finally, people are now resorting to self-help due to absence of court”.
