Nigerian scholar’s groundbreaking research earns him prestigious international award

Lukman Abidemi Bello, a distinguished Nigerian scholar, has shared how his groundbreaking research and academic excellence helped him secure the prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship for a research-based MSc at the University of Warwick, Coventry, United Kingdom.

Speaking with our correspondent on Monday, Bello reflected on his academic journey, which began with a First-Class degree in Chemistry from the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), in 2016. Graduating among the top 0.1% of 2,500 students, his exceptional performance earned him multiple accolades, including nine Dean’s Awards for Academic Excellence. Additionally, he was awarded the prestigious Adopt-Your-Student Initiative Scholarship, which fully funded his undergraduate studies. Beyond academics, Bello also received leadership awards in recognition of his impact on the academic, social, and spiritual well-being of his peers.

Upon graduation, he took up a research assistant position at FUTA, where he led a team of researchers in developing effective treatment technologies for cosmetic wastewater. With the increasing need for green and eco-friendly environmental practices, Bello and his team sought innovative solutions to mitigate the environmental impact of industrial wastewater from cosmetic production. The rise of cosmetic industries—driven by the growing demand for personal care products—necessitated a comprehensive study of wastewater treatment methods due to the inevitable discharge of pollutants into the environment.

Bello’s research centered on spectroscopic analysis of organic pollutants in cosmetic wastewater, which enabled him to develop advanced methodologies for the treatment of these pollutants. With the aid of cutting-edge analytical techniques, he was able to investigate the chemical composoition of these pollutants. His findings were published in the International Journal of Chemical and Biomolecular Science under the title, “Treatment Technologies for Wastewater from the Cosmetic Industry – A Review.” This groundbreaking research opened novel frontiers in wastewater treatment, particularly for chemical industries, and has since been widely cited in studies focused on environmental remediation and sustainable waste management.
His consistent excellence in research, academics, and leadership earned him the highly competitive Commonwealth Scholarship (CSC) in 2019. According to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) website, this prestigious international award is designed to identify and support talented individuals who have the potential to drive positive change within their communities and beyond. Speaking to our correspondent, Bello attributed his selection from thousands of applicants across 54 countries to his proven track record of research excellence, academic performance, and leadership prowess.

With the support of this prestigious scholarship, Bello pursued a Research-based MSc in Analytical Science and Instrumentation at the University of Warwick. His research focused on “The Application of Analytical Techniques for the Characterization of Plant Materials for Nutritional Investigation and Energy Conversion”, a project that gained significant relevance amid the growing global focus on climate change and renewable energy. One of his published manuscripts from this research, titled “Delonix regia Seeds and Pods: Characterization and Its Potential as a Feedstock for Thermochemical Conversion”, has been featured in a reputable scientific journal. His research introduced innovative methodologies in biomass characterization and feedstock optimization, providing a scientific basis for thermochemical reactions, material recovery, and waste-to-energy conversion.

Bello completed his MSc at Warwick with Distinction, emerging top of his cohort, a testament to his exceptional academic achievement and the impact of the Commonwealth Scholarship in supporting scholars from developing countries. Looking ahead, he aims to become a chaired professor and lead pioneering research in the application of cutting-edge analytical techniques in food processing, energy conversion, and drug discovery.
With an impressive research portfolio and global recognition, Bello remains a shining example of how academic excellence and research innovation can create pathways for international success, inspiring the next generation of African scholars and scientists.
