Having discovered poor teaching methodology as one of the factors hampering mathematics education in the country, Director General, National Mathematics Centre (NMC), Prof. Adewale Solarin, has pledged that the centre would provide resource persons that would offer free training to mathematics teachers that participated in the 2016 edition of The Ultimate Mathematics Ambassador (TUMA) competition.

Speaking shortly after awarding prizes to winners of the competition, in which 10 year-old pupil of Grace Children School, Gbagada, Lagos Emeka Ilozor, emerged overall champion, Solarin said the centre was committed to upholding any vision that would help eradicate mathematics phobia among Nigerian students.

Additionally, Solarin said the centre will give textbooks and sundry incentives to all the contestants that scored 70 per cent and above, while the schools that produced the top ten would be given 50 copies of NMC books each.

He said, “We would continue to support the mission of TUMA; identify and encourage young talents in the mathematical sciences; stimulate their enthusiasm, and prepare Nigeria for a leading role in mathematics and the sciences. We would also provide resource persons to train mathematics teachers of about 349 schools that participated in the 2016 edition of TUMA.

Ilozor went home with a cash prize of N125, 000 and a plaque. His teacher, Mr. Ackah Joseph got N50, 000, and a plaque, while his school received a laptop computer, printer, textbooks and a plaque.

Adekunle Oreoluwa David of Lifecrown Private School, Abeokuta, received a cash prize of N100, 000 and a plaque for finishing in second place. His teacher got N30, 000, while his school also received a laptop computer and textbooks.
