Novo Health Africa creates awareness on mental health disorders in organizations

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Novo Health Africa, Dr. Dorothy Jeff – Nnamani has over the weekend revealed that lack of ideas and poor performance due to mental depression of workers can kill an organization faster than lack of fund.

Nnamani, who said this during an Executive Symposium in Lagos, noted that organizations must adopt and maintain psychologically safe work culture that is positive for their employees’ mental wellbeing.

According to her, the World Health Organization (WHO), reports that “over 21 million Nigerians are living with one form of mental health challenges or the other and just 20 per cent of this figure gets to access any form of early treatment. The greater percentage remains hiding either due to stigmatization or ignorance,” she added.

Therefore, in accordance with Novo Health’s vision to promote health for social development, “our action is to set an agenda to change the attitude that leads to discrimination, as well as increase the level of awareness in the area of mental health.”

She further said the symposium was geared towards not only raising awareness, but also to equip the 21st business executives on how to tackle work place mental depression to impact organizational productivity and profitability.

Hence the choice of the theme, “Salutem Reditus: What Your Competitors Do Not Know.”

She cited that, according to research and statistics available, more than 2.5 million people in Lagos State has one form of mental disorder.

Also, one of the major factors identified as the cause of mental health illness is work place stress.

The Novo Health CEO, told The Guardian, “if WHO’s reports are something to go by, then mental health is indeed alarming, so employers should put into consideration the mental wellbeing of their workers if they desire growth.”
