Deborah Ogunbolu, a pupil of Child of Promise School, Ajah, Lagos, was the cynosure of all eyes at the 11th yearly Tastee Spelling Bee competition for schools in Lagos State.

After hours of rigorous sessions of brainstorming by participants from over 40 schools, Ogunbolu emerged TFC Spelling Bee 2022 champion, carting home the winner’s prize of N250, 000 worth of scholarship, a laptop, a printer for her school and meal vouchers for both teachers and pupils.

Izuchukwu Ogbonnaya, from Mac Patra Nursery and Primary School, emerged runner-up, winning N150, 000 scholarship, a notepad and meal vouchers for teachers and pupils, while Gideon from Pacelli School for the Blind finished third, with N100, 000 scholarship, a notepad and meal vouchers for teachers and pupils as prize. Certificates of participation were also presented to winners.

Ogunbolu expressed gratitude to TFC management for giving thoughts to the future of the Nigerian child.

“I am very excited by the opportunity and scholarship funds for school and tech camp,” she said.

The yearly TFC competition organised to mark the international children’s day, was conceived to honour Olubunmi Adedayo, a former executive director of TFC, who pioneered the first edition of the competition, and under whose memory, the Bunmi Adedayo Foundation, a non-profit organisation, was established.

Chairman, TFC, Mr. Adekunle Adedayo and his wife, Olayinka , who is the Group Managing Director, expressed delight at the impressive turnout of schools and how the competition has continued to flourish through the years.

She said the competition is an initiative geared towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG4), ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities, while helping participants to improve their spelling skills and develop usages that will help them face the world.

The competition was supported by Pepsi Nigeria, MTN Nigeria, Techquestcamp, Zenith Bank, and Chivita, among others.
