OLAOLUWA Matthew Oyebode of the department of Computer Science has emerged as the 2015 overall best-graduating student of the Redeemer’s University (RUN), Ede, Osun State with the highest CGPA of 4.91.

He was unveiled at the Seventh Convocation ceremony of the school held last Tuesday at the institution’s permanent site, Ede, carting away majority of the cash prizes and awards of the day.

With the feat, the institution has offered him a full scholarship for his postgraduate programme as a worthy ambassador, who has shown “his prowess not just in academics, he is the ideal and exemplary young man who has shown leadership in all ramifications.”

In all, the school graduated a total of 447 students. 15 graduated with First Class, 135 in the Second Class Upper division, 200 on Second Class Lower division, while 97 were on Third Class and Pass grades.

The excited best graduand attributed his success to his wonderful lecturers, motivation from staff of the school, hard work and determination to be the best among his peers.

“Nothing comes by accident. I gave my best and when you give your best you’ll surely get a good result. I encountered a lot of challenges; especially with the kind of course I studied, which requires a lot of reading. I was also involved in lots of activities, especially at my 300 level when I was the president of the chapel. I had to plan my time very well because at times I had to sleep late at night, but God saw me through.”

While dedicating the feat to God, his parents and lecturers, he advised his juniors to have vision in order to get the best in life.

In his speech, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Debo Adeyewa, who congratulates the graduands, said the verifiable records of achievements of the school add credence to its claim as one of the best institutions in the country.

He disclosed that in the past six convocations, the ladies have ruled stoically and steadily as best graduating students, defying feeble challenges posed by their male counterparts. “In the history of the university, five ladies have clinched the top slots and only one man was able to appear at the much coveted spot.

“It is imperative to thank the womenfolk for their brilliant performances. For this graduating class, of the 15 First Class graduands, 11 are girls leaving a paltry slot of four for the boys. This translates to 73 per cent for the ladies and 27 per cent for the gents. For the second class upper and lower divisions, girls still dominate with 68 per cent and 60 per cent respectively, leaving the boys to rule the lowest categories (Third Class (58 %) and Pass 86%).”

According to him, RUN has become a veritable attraction for distinguished and accomplished academics, adding that its academic programmes are highly rated and are fully accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

Adeyewa noted that the university is particular about building lives and molding character, adding that few years ago, the school started its Recovery of Destiny programme as a window of opportunity to student offenders who after expulsion, are ready to undergo a transformational programme in partnership with two visionary non-governmental organisations and wish to come back to the university if successful.

He urged the graduands to put to positive use of all the trainings and virtues they had passed through. “I want you to know that by the reason of the covenant working for you, you are indomitable.”
