OWING to the high risk of hypertension among adults in the country, Omron Healthcare has urged Nigerians to take their health in their hands adding that no doctor or pharmacist would be more responsible to a person’s health than oneself

President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Omron Healthcare Europe B.V, Andre Van Gils, at a media parley in Lagos, last week, said that currently the prevailing rate of sudden death in the country is increasing, and based on available reports, this is largely due to poor awareness and personal health management.

Gils made a courtesy visit to the country to see how Omron Healthcare can assist Nigerians in tackling the prevailing rate of sudden death caused by hypertension and other diseases like Asthma.

He said that it is shocking to see a lot of people lining up to see a doctor in the hospital.

Gils further stated: “In Nigeria, it takes hours to wait and see a doctor. But how can we get people to do more of home blood pressure measurement and reduce the burden on the doctors? We know that one in every three adult Nigerian is hypertensive. And many people are not aware of this. There are also a lot of children that suffer from respiratory diseases like Asthma. As such, it calls for health awareness.

“There are a lot of healthcare issues that need to be addressed in Nigeria. And Omron Healthcare through its business partner in Nigeria, New Heights Pharma, is helping to address a lot of these healthcare issues.

“So, we try to engage healthcare practitioners to help educate these people on this silent killer disease. We also have a training programme in several markets called the Omron Academy to address this. We have a long term plan to see how we can help improve the Nigerian healthcare system.

“As a business, Omron Healthcare makes and sells affordable products that address life threatening diseases such as Hypertension, asthma, etc. We try and help people to improve their health. Omron Healthcare is the global leader in production and sales of professional and home blood pressure monitors and nebulizers. We have an Eighty-One year history of innovation, market leadership, intelligent technology and design to support our mantra ‘All for Healthcare’.

“Omron’s brand of blood pressure monitors accounts for half of the global market share. Nigeria is the biggest single market in Africa and it is one of our focus markets in the future. We will help develop the country’s healthcare system from our perspective.

“The Omron BPM is the only brand of Blood Pressure Monitors in the Nigerian market that is registered with official government bodies such as the National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), assuring sustainable product quality levels.”

Managing Director, New Heights Pharma, Mr. Omaruaye Ogheneochuko, said that hypertension is more prevalent in blacks and Nigeria is the biggest country with blacks.

He said: “When you put all these factors into consideration, you will agree that our health system is not exactly how it should be.
