The Director-General, Lagos State Safety Commission (LSSC), Hon. Akeem Dickson

The Lagos State government has begun a project geared towards ensuring the safety of children and students. It is being handled by the Lagos State Safety Commission.

Director-General of the Commission, Mr. Dickson Hakeem, said one major component of the School Safety project involves an assessment of the systems that educational institutions have in place to ensure that risks to and health of pupils, staff and parents are as minimal as possible. He made the remarks during the presentation of safety compliance certificates to Dansol High School, Ikeja.

Hakeem said that the commission in the next five years will attain its ‘Vision Zero’ where safety of every student and pupils across the state would be guaranteed.

He continued: “The school has gone into the level three out of the five levels about the compliance of their safety, getting to level five is trying to get zero vision of accident. What we are talking about is that bare we actually putting health of the students and everybody around you first are they safe, if everybody is safe that is fine and that is what we want to achieve.”

The Director also noted that, it is also important that everywhere need to be insured, as for school the if the student falls down mistakenly maybe as they are playing and gets injured the school do not have to pay, it should be the insurance, though we are proactive so that such accidents will not occur. Similarly, Principal Consultant of InSiGHt, Dr. Nnenna Mba-Oduwusi, expressed her satisfaction as Dansol High School, a Nigerian school with an exemplary standard of safety. She said Dansol is the first Nigerian School to attain the SafeZoneTM certification, which assesses over 400 safety criteria, as she is pleased to recognise their achievements as a level three school and encouraged other schools to follow the same path.

Meanwhile, the Proprietress, Dansol High School said the commission on safety are doing a whole lot to create awareness on safety. She said: “Safety is number one because we deal with lives and these are young lives so we as the adult in charge we have to be safety conscious. What the commission is asking us to do, we will to take it seriously. All the things they counsel us to do we will put it in place and encourage our staff to abide by it. We are determined that every loop hole is blocked to ensure that everyone is safe.
