Songs of Continuity: Kelechi Uzoho unites diaspora generations at Igbo Union Yorkshire Annual End-of-Year cultural day celebration

The Premier Banqueting Hall in Leeds was transformed into a radiant celebration of Igbo identity as members of the diaspora gathered for the Igbo Union Yorkshire (IUY) Annual End-of-Year Cultural Day Celebration and Leadership Inauguration Ceremony which held on the 14th of December 2024. The night was a testament to the vibrancy and resilience of Igbo cultural expression in Leeds United Kingdom, and at the centre of this experience stood Kelechi Uzoho— musician, youth leader, and the newly inaugurated Provost of the Union.

This performance followed his critically acclaimed appearance at the Ogbako Ndi Igbo UK & Ireland Iri Ji Festival on August 24th, 2024, where his headline set was hailed as a spiritual and cultural triumph. Building on that momentum, his appearance at the End-of-Year Cultural Day Celebration was yet another display of his evolving role as both artist and cultural leader.

Kelechi Uzoho, best known as the founder and leader of De Royal Live Band, delivered the cultural crescendo of the evening. His set was not merely musical— it was an act of cultural communion, weaving traditional highlife, praise songs, and Igbo gyration rhythms into a collective experience of celebration and reflection.

“A moving celebration of Igbo identity in the diaspora— his music transcends entertainment, becoming a living archive of oral history, memory, and belonging.”

That same emotional and cultural charge resonated again at this December event. Kelechi’s melodies stirred the crowd, his transitions from ancestral chants to festive anthems reflecting both deep-rooted cultural memory and diasporic adaptability. The result was an atmosphere where generations danced side by side, united by rhythm and heritage.

“Kelechi is a natural cultural conduit,” I added. “His artistry bridges the past and the present, reminding us of who we are and what we must pass on.”

The evening also symbolised Kelechi’s transition from IUY Youth Leader (2023–2024) to Provost, a respected role that honours guardianship of tradition. His inauguration during the event solidified his dual identity as both performer and custodian of culture.

“Our goal is to celebrate who we are and pass it on to the next generation,” Uzoho reflected. “Music is our language, and through it, we stay rooted and united.”

In addition to his standout performance, the event featured traditional dance troupes, youth showcases, and community-wide singing. A newly elected leadership team, led by President Dr. Emmanuel Nwofe, was formally inaugurated, marking a new chapter in the organisation’s journey.

Yet it was Kelechi’s musical direction— anchored in the spirit of the Iri Ji Festival and magnified in this celebratory setting—that defined the emotional core of the night. His work continues to shape a living legacy for Igbo music in the UK, bridging diaspora generations with grace, rhythm, and purpose.
