Two die, three injured in Ikotun-Egbe inferno
Black smoke on the wall, fumes from the burnt property, debris and a green colour pair of shoes at the entrance of the living room of late Mr. Inedia, popular known as Papa Ofure welcome any sympathizers to the house at No 57. Authority Avenue, Egbe, Ikotun area of Alimosho local council area.
Inedia and his family of five went to bed with joy after a long day’s activities on Tuesday hoping to have a blissful night rest as usual but little did they know that Mr. Inedia, the head of the family and Ngozi, his sister in-law would be dead the following morning.
Mrs. Inedia (Mama Ofure) had no inkling that she was going to be a widow in the next few hours and that her kid sister would be no more. No thanks to the fire that occurred and claimed their lives between 2am and 4.30am.
Inedia and his sister in-law died in the inferno, which is speculated to have been caused by electrical spark from one of the home appliances.
A neighbour, who identified herself simply as Cynthia, told The Guardian that Inedia died while trying to switch off the power supply in his apartment.
She said: “When I heard my neigbhour shouting for help around 2am, I and my family hurriedly rushed out of our flat and started looking for ways to bring them out but the fire had already engulfed the whole apartment. We were helpless as we couldn’t gain assess into the house until the arrival of fire fighters.”
Cynthia said when the fire fighter came, they exhausted their water and they had to call their men in Isolo. But before the fire fighters from Isolo came, the fire had been put out and Inedia’s wife with his two children rescued but Inedia himself was already dead with his hand fixed on the switch box. Apparently, he was electrocuted while trying to carry out the first action in the rescue process.
Cynthia described Ngozi, Inedia’s sister in-law, as a paragon of beauty. She said the beautiful girl was a promising lady. “She was sleeping when the fire started. I think the fire caught her right on the bed because we met her lifeless body on the bed, burnt beyond recognition,” she said.
Another occupant of a flat at the ground floor of the building, Mrs. Mariam Okusanya, said the fire started with an explosion at about 2am. She said the loud shout for help from her neighbor was what woke her up from sleep.
Okusanya said the timely summon of the fire fighters by the security men in the area saved the whole four flats from being consumed by the raging inferno. The fire fighter came barely thirty minutes later and broke walls into the apartment before they could rescue Mrs. Inedia and her two children.
According to her, the husband whom she call a sailor and her sister in-law were dead before help could come. “I escaped being trapped in the fire before fire service came to the rescue,” she said.
Many sympathizing neighbours, who came around spoke well of the deceased. It was gathered that he just came back two weeks ago. The mysterious fire burnt the property in Inedia’s flat completely but the remaining three flats were slightly affected.
