As Nigerian students continue to blaze academic trails abroad, an American institution, Dayton University, Ohio, United States has announced a global partnership to enable them qualify directly for admission with just West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) results and also be exempted from application fees.

The institution, which believes Nigerian students are brilliant and stronger academically, has expressed its resolve to attract them to the institution through many incentives.

After its visit to the country to evaluate the curriculum at both university and secondary level, the Dayton management has disclosed that Nigerian students would be exempted from additional entrance examinations such as SAT, GRE, GMAT or British A level system and given partial merit scholarships if they have good grades.

Speaking at a media briefing at Radisson Blu Hotel, Lagos, Regional Director, West Africa, Selma Toohey said they are trying to stripe back all the hurdles for students in the country so that they could come to the university of Dayton, be successful and build a great future.

Noting that Nigerian students are stronger in science, technology and mathematics, Toohey said the institution would aid their studies with scholarship to encourage their academic pursuits.

She said: “ Undergraduates students with a distinction average will automatically qualify for a $10, 000 academic scholarship per annum. Students who are seeking postgraduate admission with a 2:1 or first class will be awarded a $5, 000 academic scholarship”.

According to her, there are over 10, 000 Nigerian students presently studying in the United States because of the world class quality of institutions available there.

Recruitment Director, Africa, EU and Russia, Michael Lawson stated that the institution is ranked 56 best engineering schools out of 4, 500 universities in America and boost an impressive research resume with sponsorship up to $117.6million.

“We do have scholarship available, up to $20, 000, not just for the first year, but all four years of study for students from Nigeria”, he said.
He however warned that the scholarship is not for everyone stating that only a strong student with good results in WAEC, NECO and others could benefit.

Lawson said the university, which ranked eleven in entrepreneurship in America, is a close-nit community where everyone has a sense of belonging and Nigerian students would fit in.
