There is a positive and fundamental transformation going on in the study of communications in the Bayero University, Kano, reflecting contemporary trends and global approaches.
All thanks to the renewed interest and commitment of the University management in the study of communication and performing arts.
The University started Mass Communication programme in 1977. From then, until recently, not much had significantly changed in the programme except for the normal growth and routine changes. But in recent times, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Abubakar A. Rasheed with the support of the Senate and management decided to transform communication studies to reflect the trends in global communication studies. The latest steps are motivated by the need to strategically position the university as the training ground for professionals who can competitively fit into the emerging reality of communication technologies, digitized media, growing film industry and all trends and technicalities associated with the sector.
The vision of the VC for BUK has always been to produce globally acknowledged scholars through its postgraduate programmes. Today, his dream is gradually becoming a reality.
The University has, therefore, invested over N500 million to construct a massive complex comprising of a Deanery, broadcast studio complex, performing arts theatre, offices, computer laboratories, and exquisite classrooms.
This is besides acquisition of furniture and equipment worth hundreds of millions of naira. Indeed, today, BUK can easily pass as the only univerrsity with such a complex exclusively for undertaking communication and performing arts studies.
The University has also taken a bold and a pioneering step of transforming the Department of Mass Communication into a Faculty of Communication with multiple departments for communications, performing arts, information and film studies.
