Prostate cancer remains one of the most pressing health challenges, affecting millions of men globally and standing as the second most common cancer among men.
One of the trailblazers confronting this challenge is Yetunde Ebunlomo Oyende, a Ph.D. candidate at Drexel University College of Medicine. Her pioneering work on metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) is reshaping the understanding of how cancer spreads and persists, especially in the bones—a primary site of metastasis in prostate cancer.
Oyende’s research focuses on the interplay between the tumor microenvironment and cancer metastasis, with a particular emphasis on the role of IL-1β, a pro-inflammatory cytokine, in facilitating bone colonization in prostate cancer. By uncovering how androgen-deprivation therapies can inadvertently increase IL-1β levels and accelerate disease progression, she is helping identify potential targets for more effective therapies.
A native of Nigeria, Oyende began her academic journey at Lagos State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry. Her passion for research was evident early on, as her undergraduate work explored the inhibitory effects of protein isolates on key metabolic enzymes. This foundation propelled her to Drexel University, where her doctoral studies have centered on drug discovery and cancer pharmacology under the mentorship of the distinguished Fatatis Lab.
Oyende’s contributions extend beyond prostate cancer; her research portfolio includes studies on breast cancer brain metastases and melanoma, showcasing her versatility and commitment to advancing oncology as a whole.
Her work not only deepens scientific understanding but also brings hope for more precise and effective treatments for cancer patients worldwide.
Her remarkable achievements have earned her global recognition, establishing her as a rising star in the field of oncology.
With her innovative approach to addressing some of the most complex challenges in cancer research, Oyende is laying the groundwork for future breakthroughs that could transform the lives of countless patients.
Driven by her passion for discovery and her commitment to impactful research, Yetunde Oyende continues to exemplify the power of science in tackling humanity’s most pressing health issues.
