Morning baths and brushing for toddlers, especially in the morning, can feel like such a hard job. Most of the time, they don’t even want to wake up, let alone brush their teeth. But skipping dental care isn’t an option. Poor oral hygiene can lead to cavities, gum infections, and a lifetime of dental issues. So, how do you make brushing fun and easy for your little one? ITORO OLADOKUN shares five practical ways to turn toothbrushing into an activity that toddlers actually enjoy.

Make it a game

Toddlers love games, so turn brushing into a fun challenge. Use a timer and pretend they need to “defeat” cavity monsters before the countdown ends. You can also let them brush their favourite stuffed animal’s “teeth” before brushing their own. I absolutely get the fact that you are probably late for other morning errands, but their cries can worsen the whole situation altogether. However, when brushing feels like playtime, they’ll be more excited to do it.

Let them pick their toothbrush and toothpaste

Giving your child a say in their toothbrush and toothpaste makes them feel in control. Let them pick a toothbrush with their favourite cartoon character and a toothpaste flavour they like. The economic situation may not allow the luxury of all flavours, but you can get at least two types. Strawberry or mild mint flavours work better than strong mint, which toddlers often dislike. Allowing them to pick their toothpaste and brush makes them feel more comfortable brushing, especially in the morning.

Sing as you brush

There are many cartoon songs that encourage brushing. Be the DJ and sing along, as they will most likely want to sing and act as you do. The one that works for me is “This is the way we brush our teeth.” Begin with any song you can remember and encourage them to sing with you.

Brush together

Toddlers love to copy what they see. If they watch you brushing and having fun with it, they’ll want to join in. Make exaggerated “Ahhh” and “Eeee” sounds while brushing or do a little dance to make it entertaining. I guarantee they’ll come along.

Additionally, you can install mirrors in the bathroom. This can encourage them, as they love to watch themselves and see how well they are actually doing it.

Use positive reinforcement

Praise and rewards work wonders. After a successful brushing session, celebrate their effort with claps, high-fives, or a sticker chart. Once they complete a week of brushing, offer a small reward like an extra bedtime story or a special treat (not sweets!). Don’t use punishment or force, as it can make them resist brushing even more.

Tell fun stories about teeth

Turn brushing into a storytelling moment. Create a story about the “tooth superheroes” fighting off “sugar bugs” or tell them that their favourite cartoon character loves brushing their teeth. Relatable stories help toddlers understand why brushing matters in a fun way.
