As Nigeria’s beauty industry expands, local makeup brands are gaining attention for products tailored to melanin-rich skin, tropical weather, and the needs of consumers often overlooked by global cosmetics companies.
For years, international cosmetics brands have dominated Nigeria’s beauty market, many of them developed with different climates, skin tones, and consumer needs in mind. But as the country’s beauty industry grows, more entrepreneurs and industry voices are encouraging Nigerians to pay closer attention to locally made products designed specifically for African skin.
Beyond performance, homegrown beauty brands often consider the realities of Nigeria’s tropical climate, deeper skin tones, and the preferences of consumers whom global beauty companies have historically underserved.
In recent years, Nigerian brands have expanded their shade ranges, developed long-wear formulas suited to humid weather, and created products tailored to melanin-rich skin.
The issue also came up during the Fashion and Beauty Roundtable at the last Entertainment Week Africa organised by Livespot 360, where beauty entrepreneur Mariam Adeyemi Timmer, founder of Lure Beauty, argued that Nigerian consumers often overlook the advantages of locally made cosmetics.
“Support Nigerian beauty brands because those foreign products you are buying, you are secondary in the formulation,” she said. “They formulate primarily for their skin.”
Her remarks reflect a push within the industry to build stronger support for Nigerian beauty entrepreneurs while encouraging consumers to explore products developed with local conditions and skin tones in mind.
