When it comes to attractiveness, a woman’s hair is one of her most striking and appealing features. Women always look for ways to be creative with their hairstyles. Some even choose to colour their hair to give distinctive appearance, while others simply do it to experiment and try new things. However, when the hair is coloured, you are making way for chemicals to penetrate deep into the cuticles, which can affect them negatively if there’s no proper care.

Not taking proper care of dyed hair can lead to hair loss because chemicals in dye can cause it to break, as it is now fragile. It can also cause dryness and so much more.

Imagine investing a lot of money in colouring your hair only to struggle later with its maintenance or not get to enjoy the worth of your money because you neglected it. No one will wish to experience that. However, the good news is that you do not need to worry if you want to experiment and colour your hair. You can maintain coloured hair in a variety of ways, and keep it looking healthy and vibrant for longer, particularly at home.

Use shampoo and conditioner free of sulfate
Sulfates are chemicals that can strip the colour from your hair. It is found in many care products, and it gives shampoo and conditioner the foaming effect. Use a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner that are specifically formulated for colour-treated hair. Hair products with sulfate can strip the hair of its natural oil and moisture, leaving it dry and unhealthy. Therefore, using a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner will not only give you a healthy scalp with balanced oil production, but also give you softer, stronger and shinier hair. Also, you do not need to be worried about the colour washing out or fading.

Wait before washing
The process of colouring the hair leaves the cuticles open and very prone to damage. Wait for at least three days before washing your hair after getting it dyed. The cuticle layer may still be exposed if you wash your hair too soon after coloring your hair, which could cause your colour to wash off. Waiting a few days before washing newly dyed hair gives the cuticles some time to properly seal the colour and prevent it from fading too soon.

Avoid heat styling
You certainly do not want to spend money to colour your hair and watch it fade out in no time. Therefore, avoid using heat-styling tools like straighteners, curling irons, and hair dryers because they can damage your hair, strip away moisture, and cause the colour to fade faster. If you must use these tools, make sure to use a heat protectant spray before blow drying or styling, and only style your hair when it is completely dry.

Skip hot showers
Hot showers can also damage and make your hair dye fade faster. Therefore, it is advisable to switch to lukewarm water or cool water to rinse your hair at the end of your shower to seal the cuticles and help the colour last longer, also enhancing the radiance of your hair.

Apply leave-in treatments
Look for leave-in conditioning treatments that are specially formulated to protect color-treated hair especially if you use blow dryers, straighteners and so on frequently. Leave-in conditioners help with detangling the hair, moisturising it, and preventing damage of any kind. You should use a leave-in conditioner at least once per week. You can use more if your hair is dry.

Use deep conditioners
Deep conditioners help to make coloured hair shiny and silky. This treatment should be applied on damp hair, covered with a shower cap or plastic bag, and then a warm towel around your head, for enough heat. This treatment should be left on for about 30 minutes to an hour. Deep conditioning penetrates the hair shaft, adds moisture to the hair, and also prevents breakage.
