When Behind The Scenes premiered in December 2025, it came with weight. Backed by a star-studded cast and massive expectations, the film quickly became a commercial force, breaking box office records and grossing hundreds of millions within days. But beyond the numbers, the real question is: does the film hold up creatively?

At its core, Behind The Scenes tells the story of Aderonke “Ronke” Faniran, a successful woman whose generosity becomes her burden, exposing the emotional and financial strain of being the “strong one” in a Nigerian family. That premise alone is powerful in many ways, and it is where the film truly shines.

The film’s greatest strength lies in its relatability. It taps into a reality many Nigerians understand too well, and the unspoken pressure placed on successful individuals to carry family and friends.

This is most evident in the scene where Ronke is confronted by multiple family and friends’ demands at once, even when she was sick, forcing her to choose between her own needs and their expectations.

The moment captures the emotional weight of being the “strong one,” a theme the film consistently returns to. This theme resonates deeply, turning the film into more than entertainment; it becomes a reflection of lived experiences.

That emotional connection is not accidental. Funke Akindele leans into familiar storytelling patterns that speak directly to her audience, blending drama and humour in a way that feels culturally grounded. The result is a film that audiences don’t just watch but recognise themselves in.

The ensemble of cast and their performance is another strong point. They deliver convincing portrayals, with Scarlet Gomez anchoring the story as Ronke, while supporting actors bring energy and tension to the narrative. The emotional weight carried by the characters helps sustain the film, even when the plot begins to strain.

Visually, the film also holds its own. Its polished production, upscale settings, and attention to detail reflect Nollywood’s growing technical ambition.

However, the film’s biggest strength, which is its relatability, is also its limitation. In trying to appeal to a wide audience, Behind the Scenes often chooses familiarity over depth. The themes of sacrifice, betrayal, and emotional burnout are introduced strongly, but they are not always explored with the complexity they deserve. Instead, the story sometimes leans into predictable resolutions and simplified moral conclusions.

There is also an issue with narrative balance. The film juggles multiple characters and subplots, but not all of them are fully developed. Some arcs feel rushed, while others are stretched unnecessarily, creating an uneven pacing that affects the overall flow.

Another noticeable weakness is the film’s tendency toward melodrama. In certain moments, emotional scenes are pushed too far, sacrificing subtlety for intensity. Critics have pointed out that this reliance on exaggerated situations reduces the impact of what could have been a more nuanced story.

Even the dialogue, while engaging, occasionally becomes too direct in spelling out messages instead of allowing the audience to interpret them.

Despite its imperfection, Behind The Scenes succeeds in one critical area: it connects. Audiences have responded strongly, not just in ticket sales but in emotional reactions, with many viewers reflecting on their own lives after watching. That connection explains its massive success, including its transition from cinemas to streaming platforms, where it continues to gain attention.
