Toke had faced criticism for her presence at the high-profile event, with speculations about her relationship with a politician circulating online. Debbie Shokoya came to Toke’s defense, highlighting a common trend in Nigeria where unmarried, hardworking women are unfairly given unnecessary titles based on assumptions.

Expressing her disbelief at the negativity directed towards Toke, Debbie questioned why people were quick to undermine her achievements and attribute her success to a man. In a plea for fairness, she wrote, “This is someone who has been working hard for years. So, people choose to shove aside this hard work and put the credit on men!! Being unmarried is a sin in Nigeria. Wooow!!! I Still Wouldn’t Understand The Hate!!!”

Debbie continued to challenge societal norms by questioning the message being sent to the younger generation, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and celebrating women’s accomplishments irrespective of their marital status.

The actress also referenced singer Davido’s comments on Nigerians in Dubai facing backlash and tied it to the broader issue of unfairly judging women in the public eye.

Debbie Shokoya concluded her defense by urging people to reconsider their perspectives, asking, “What Are You Telling The Young Generation? That Being Married Is An Achievement And Will Free You From People Unnecessarily Judging You And Your Wins? Make It Make Sense Pls.”

In a related note, Debbie Shokoya had previously defended Toyin Abraham amid criticisms for supporting President Tinubu, praising the actress for her resilience, growth, and unwavering spirit.
