Makeup has long been a way for people to express themselves and embrace their unique appearance and identity. Often, people who wear makeup face judgement from others who chalk it down to a way to conceal imperfections. However, makeup is much more than that—it’s a form of art.

Just as an artistic painting, makeup allows individuals to use their faces as a canvas, expressing different aspects of their personality and uniqueness. For some, the process is a deeply personal ritual—a time to connect with oneself. For others, it’s a moment of relaxation or a simple act of enjoyment. Just like the clothes we wear, it has the power to showcase our inner self to others.

The evolution of makeup

The history of makeup dates back thousands of years. According to Brittanica, the first ever use was  in Ancient Egypt about 6,000 years ago, where it was used to signify wealth and appeal to the gods. People of all genders wore eyeliners as early as 4,000 BCE.

By the 1940s and 1950s, red lipstick had become a universal trend. Then beauty standards saw a shift between the 70s and the 90s. Some women stopped wearing make-up altogether while others wore even brighter colours. Today, it has become less stereotyped and more widely accepted as a form of self-expression.

The makeup effect

The term “makeup” is often associated with altering facial features, although it can be applied to enhance any part of the body.

One remarkable effect is its ability to accentuate an individual’s natural beauty. Hence, a well-applied eyeshadow can make the eyes pop, mascara can elongate the lashes, and a flawlessly blended foundation can create a smooth, even complexion.

Global social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube have given beauty influencers their stages to showcase their creativity, leading to a vast range of styles and trends.

“Makeup, as part of cosmetology, has evolved into a dynamic means of enhancing beauty and facilitating self-expression,” said Dr. Ajay Rana, an internationally renowned Dermatologist, Surgeon, Aesthetic Physician and the Founder and Director of ILAMED and Dermalyn Aesthetics.

“With its rich history and ever-evolving techniques, makeup empowers individuals to express themselves artistically and authentically. It showcases the diverse spectrum of beauty in the world, igniting confidence and self-discovery. Whether through subtle accents or bold statements, make-up continues to evolve, inspiring individuals to embrace their true selves.”

While makeup empowers and uplifts, it can be influenced by societal beauty standards. Hence, it is essential to remember that makeup should be a choice, an enhancement rather than a mask to fit someone else’s idea of beauty. It should celebrate your features, not hide them.
