Nigerian rapper and activist Falz has once again found himself at the centre of national conversation after reacting to First Lady Oluremi Tinubu’s remarks on economic empowerment, with his comments sparking widespread discussion across social media.

The controversy began after the First Lady defended her earlier advice encouraging Nigerians to explore small-scale businesses such as selling akara, roasting corn and producing kuli-kuli as legitimate means of earning a living.
She also urged wealthy Nigerians, including entertainers, to establish charitable foundations to support less privileged citizens.

Responding to the comments on X, Falz criticised the popular political slogan, “Emi Lokan,” suggesting that the country’s current economic realities have left many Nigerians frustrated. Although his post was brief, it quickly gained traction online, drawing thousands of reactions from supporters and critics alike.

His remarks also attracted the attention of APC chieftain Ayekooto Akindele, who disagreed with the rapper’s position and accused him of making unhelpful political comments. The exchange added another layer to an already heated conversation, with users on social media split over whether celebrities should publicly challenge government officials on national issues.

Falz is no stranger to speaking out on matters beyond music. Over the years, the lawyer-turned-musician has consistently used his platform to address issues such as police brutality, governance, corruption and social justice. His outspoken role during the #EndSARS movement further cemented his reputation as one of Nigeria’s most politically engaged entertainers.

While some Nigerians applauded his willingness to express his views, others argued that the First Lady’s comments were intended to encourage entrepreneurship rather than downplay the country’s economic challenges. The differing opinions have kept the conversation alive, with many debating the effectiveness of grassroots empowerment initiatives amid rising living costs.

The latest episode highlights the growing influence of entertainers in shaping public discourse. In an era where social media often drives national conversations, comments from high-profile figures like Falz can quickly extend beyond entertainment, prompting wider discussions about leadership, public policy and the realities facing everyday Nigerians.

Although Falz has not made any further statements on the matter, his reaction has continued to generate conversations online, reinforcing his position as one of the country’s most vocal celebrity commentators on social and political issues.
