Nollywood actress Adunni Ade has won her fundamental rights enforcement case against Polance Media Limited, publishers of Naija News, over a publication that linked her to a false relationship story involving a politician.
The Lagos High Court, sitting in Court No. 17 and presided over by Justice I.O. Harrison, delivered the judgment on June 24, 2025, in a suit marked LD/17781MFHR/2024.
According to court documents she shared on Tuesday via Instagram, the judge held that the publication titled “Six Popular Nigerian Celebrities Who Have Been Accused of Dating Dino Melaye” violated Adunni Ade’s right to privacy by placing her in a false and embarrassing light.
The court ruled that the use of her name and photograph in the story amounted to a breach of Section 37 of the 1999 Constitution and Section 24 of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023.
Justice Harrison awarded ₦20 million as general damages to the actress and further ordered the respondents to delete or expunge her name and picture from the article forthwith.
The court dismissed the respondents’ preliminary objections and held that the publication, which had remained online for over a year, was inaccurate and prejudicial.
Adunni Ade celebrated the verdict, writing, “I won my case — Adunni Ade vs Polance Media Limited (www.naijanews.com).
A false story was published about me, but truth stood tall. This judgment reaffirms that privacy matters — and so does integrity. Justice delayed isn’t justice denied.”
She also thanked her legal team led by Olumide Babalola LP for their efforts and hinted that more cases are ongoing.
