1. Lisabi: The Uprising

Lisabi” is the most talk about Nollywood films now. It was released on September 27, 2024. Lisabi is directed by Niyi Akinmolayan, produced by Adebimpe Oyebade and Victoria Akujobi, and written by Yinka Olaoye and Niyi Akinmolayan. It is loosely based on the legendary Lisabi Rebellion of the late 18th century in Abeokuta, Nigeria, vividly recounting the story of Lisabi Agbongbo Akala, an Egba warrior who led a successful revolt against the oppressive rule of the Oyo Empire.This fillm features great cast in persons of Chatta Ibrahim who acted as Songodeyi, Lateef Adedimeji as Lisabi Agbongbo Akala, Odunlade Adekola (Alaafin of Oyo, Oloyo), Femi Adebayo (Olu Olodan), Oyebade Adebimpe Adeimeji as Ikeola and Gabriel Afolayan as Odunbamitefa.

Other cast include Jide Kosoko, Eniola Ajao, Roseline “Liquorose” Afije, Olumide Oworu, Adebowale Adebayo, Kevin Ikeduba and others. It’s a must-watch film now. Everybody in the market, offices and among friends are gisting about it and analysing who acted his or her part better. Some say Ibrahim Chatta ‘killed’ his role as usual; watch and decide who kept you on your toes for the entire one hour forty-six minutes.

2. House of Ga’a

“House of Ga’a” is an epic story that is similar in style to “Lisabi: The Uprising”. It was initially released in July 2024. It is written by Tunde Babalola, directed by Bolanle Austen-Peters and produced by Joseph Imoibom and Bolanle Austen-Peters. “House of Ga’a” delves into the tumultuous ascent to power of a ruthless Prime Minister consumed by vengeance who stops at nothing to eclipse the kings he once served. With an insatiable thirst for power, he embarks on a ruthless journey to surpass the very monarchs he pledged loyalty to. The narrative explores themes of ambition, betrayal, and the complex interplay of power dynamics within a royal court.

The cast is also great as we have Femi Branch who acted as Bashorun Ga, Funke Akindele (Ayinba), Chatta Ibrahim as Sasa L, Toyin Abraham (Edan Asiko), Femi Adebayo (Olukoye), Stan Nze and others. It’s a two-hour-long film that will keep you wanting more till the very end. so, if you want a thrilling moment and also to learn about the Yoruba history and mythology, this is one for you.

3. Tòkunbò

Tòkunbò is also another latest release this year. It was filmed in Nigeria and Sèmè the Republic of Benin. Tokunbo is directed by Ramsey Nouah and written by Todimu Adegoke and Thecla Uzozie. It’s produced by Odeh Chris and Joy Odiete. The film stars Gideon Okeke who acted in the lead role as Tokunbo, alongside Adunni Ade, Tosin Adeyemi, Sunday Aaron, Majid Michel, Chidi Mokeme, Norbert Young, Funlola Aofiyebi-Raimi, Stanley Chibunna, and Darasimi Nadi.

The film follows Tòkunbò, portrayed as an ex-car smuggler who is given three hours to deliver a government official’s daughter to her captor, with the threat that his family will face dire consequences if he fails. This great piece is full of suspense and drama and worth some accolade.

4. Anikulapo: Rise of the spectre

This series originally came as a standalone, “Anikulapo” and was the talk-of-the-town film. Fans fell greatly in love with it and the producer, Kunle Afolayan decided to make it a series. This was because the much-loved film did not end well as expected by fans. So, “Anikulapo: Rise of the spectre” is a continuation of the plot of “Anikulapo”.
The film revolves around Saro. In a race against time to avoid a dismal fate, traveler Saro returns to the Oyo Kingdom with orders to complete a nearly impossible task. It’s intriguing and thrilling as every episode comes with something new to delight your eyes. It’s written by Kunle Afolayan and Shola Dada and produced by Seun Soyinka and Kunle Afolayan. It has it cast: Bimbo Ademoye, Lateef Adedimeji, Gabriel Afolayan, Kunle Remi, Sola Sobowale, Taiwo Hassan, Owobo Ogunde, Titi Kuti and others.

Oluture: The Journey

Oloture: The Journey is a three-part series on Netflix.  Oluture takes us through the story of a Nigerian journalist: Ehi who finds herself in Niger because of a story she was writing to expose the harms of sex trafficking. The series is a sequel to the movie: Oloture which was released in 2020. It was inspired by an investigation about human trafficking in Nigeria. The film, directed by Kenneth Gyang, features cast such as Sharon Ooja, Omoni Oboli, Beverly Osu, Patrick Doyle and other.

The theme that is prevalent in this film is sex and human trafficking and the implication of this corruption. It’s an interesting piece for people who want to jump on trendy films but doesn’t have the luxury of time. It’s a forty-minute masterpiece.
