“Gangnam Style” took the world by storm when it was released in 2012. The South Korean K-pop video triggered a global dance craze that nearly broke YouTube, hitting a billion views for the first time ever and rocketing up to 2.89 billion views. The video caused the site’s engineers to scramble to make changes when it topped 2.1 billion views, previously thought to be the maximum possible. The song topped the charts in over 30 countries and had everyone, even former US President Obama and his vice president David Cameron, doing the Gangnam style. Psy’s triumph was all the more striking due to the overwhelming dominance of English-language music on global charts. However, after four and a half years as YouTube’s most seen video, “Gangnam Style” slipped to number two, replaced by “See You Again” by Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth.

“See you again” featuring Charlie Puth outstripped ‘Gangnam Style’ to become the most played video in July 2017. It has racked up 2.9 billion views since it was released in April 2015. The song, which was commissioned for the soundtrack to Furious 7 and was the popular music video in 2015, is a tribute to actor Paul Walker who died in a car accident in 2013.
