Halley Berry remains the only female black actress to win the best actress category at the Oscars. She clinched her win for her role in “Monster Ball” during the 74th Academy Awards. She noted that she did not expect the win because she had resolved to enjoying being at the event.

Halley Berry said that since her win in 2002 for the best actress in the Academy Awards category there has been no other as she stands alone.

The 94th Academy Awards to take place this Sunday has no black woman in the best actress category.

It was 74 years of the Oscars when Halley Berry became the first Black woman to win the awards for best actress, but 19 years down the line in that category, Berry asserted that the big win did not lead to opening doors. “It didn’t open the door,” Berry said. “The fact that there’s no one standing next to me is heartbreaking.”

However, Forest Whitaker and Jamie Foxx, have won the best actor category in the Oscars.

The 55 years old actress notes that the lack of win does not imply that black actresses aren’t putting in the work.

“We can’t always judge success or progress by how many awards we have,” she told the Times. “Awards are the icing on the cake — they’re your peers saying you were exceptionally excellent this year — but does that mean that if we don’t get the exceptionally excellent nod, that we were not great, and we’re not successful, and we’re not changing the world with our art, and our opportunities aren’t growing?”
