Highlights Of The “Mental Health Speaks” In Nigeria

A huge turn-up of people experienced the first-ever Mental Health Speaks event, organised by the Anti Suicide And Depression Squad (ASADS) on the 19th of May, 2019 at Bogobiri, Ikoyi, Lagos.

The goal of the event was to raise funds for the organisation while giving back in return. To reach out to people and make them know they are not alone on their mental health journey and educate them on ways to overcome mental illnesses by speaking about personal experiences and learning from mental health professionals. The event included a welcome speech by the founder of ASADS, Dare Asobele and Yemi Adeyemi, Founder, Yemi Adeyemi Foundation.

Guests that joined the organisations in making the event a success included Mother Are (Psychologist) Mr. Dennis Agbeti (Psychologist), Pamilerin Adegoke (Guest Speaker), Chy Nwakanma (Guest Speaker) Miss. Aize Drizella Urhoghide(Miss Aviation Nigeria 2018), Maryam Giwa (Story teller), Uriel Ngozi Oputa (Guest speaker).

Highlighting a major factor that hinders mental health aid, Pamilerin emphasised, “cry for help, speaking out is all you need to do. Silence drowns you deeper.” Psychologist, Dennis Agbeti elaborated the role of positive affirmation and fear in mental health while Mother Are noted that once a person begins to educate himself and discuss about mental health, one becomes an unlicensed therapist.
