The paternal grandmother of late Nigerian gospel singer Toluwanisings, Sabitiyu Olayemi, has accused him of neglecting her while he was alive, insisting that he must be buried in the house he built rather than beside his late mother.
Olayemi made the statements during an interview with media personality Dumininu Kingdom, where she spoke about her relationship with the singer and his burial arrangements.
She alleged that Toluwanisings rarely contacted her, despite her family’s role in caring for his mother before her death.‘We took care of his mother very well like our own, but Toluwanisings doesn’t call me,’ she said. The grandmother also claimed that she did not know the singer had built a house until recently and only learnt of his popularity as a gospel musician shortly before his death.
Speaking about the financial support she received from him, she said, ‘He never gave me money at all, not even one kobo.’ She explained that she once gave his telephone number to a woman who helped her call him because she wanted to hear his voice.
According to Olayemi, whenever she complained about his failure to visit, the singer told her he was busy with work. She alleged that he sent her ₦10,000 on about three occasions after she raised concerns about his absence.Despite their strained relationship, she said his death deeply affected her.
‘It is my wish for him to be buried inside the house he built. They should not come and put him beside his mother’s grave at all. I will not allow it,’ she said. Her position aligns with that of the singer’s father, Muniru Adekunle Olayemi, who has also insisted that his son should be buried in the house he built in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The father had proposed that the singer could instead be buried beside his late mother in Ikirun, Osun State, if the home burial could not proceed. The burial disagreement comes amid calls by the singer’s paternal family for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Toluwanisings died on October 14, 2026, after reportedly slumping and being taken to hospitals in Ibadan, where he was later confirmed dead. His uncle, Lawal Ademola, popularly known as Up Lawal, has called for the burial to be suspended until the cause of death is established.
The family has also appealed for government support to ensure a transparent investigation. The final burial arrangements remain unresolved, with the family’s differing positions adding to the controversy surrounding the late singer’s death.
