Compared to other foods, nuts have a longer shelf life.

So, to protect the freshness and taste of your nuts, you must store these heart-healthy snacks correctly. Because improper storage can cause them to become rancid, and once they do, there’s no going back.

These tips would help you store your nuts properly, increasing their shelf life and ensuring their taste remains fresh for longer:

  1. Unlike popular assumptions, nuts are best stored in a fridge or freezer as opposed to a room temperature pantry. Because nuts are rich in unsaturated fat, a delicate oil, they are quite susceptible to getting rancid fast. Light, oxygen, and heat all help speed up the deterioration process. So, your nuts will taste better and more flavorful for a longer amount of time if you store them in the refrigerator or freezer, which reduces their exposure to all three of these.
  2. When storing nuts, airtight containers such as glass jars and plastic containers should be used. This makes sure your stored nuts will retain the right amount of moisture.
  3. If you must store items at room temperature, be careful to pick a cool, dark location away from direct heat sources. Nuts can stay fresh in this short-term storage for up to three months if they are properly sealed.
  4. Store nuts in the refrigerator for up to six months of storage, but keep them away from items with strong aromas like onions because they tend to absorb those flavours.
  5. So that you know which nuts to use first, mark the packages of your nuts with the date they were placed in storage.
  6. Before opening the bag, always allow the cold nuts to warm to room temperature. They won’t be able to absorb any extra moisture because of this.
