The band and its management company issued a statement in Korean that was shared on Twitter to confirm the pop star’s passing. They did not state the reason why.
“On April 19, ASTRO member Moonbin suddenly left us and has now become a star in the sky,” the agency said. It called on fans to refrain from “speculative and malicious reports” so that his family could process the news.
To respect their wishes, the agency added, the funeral would be held as privately as possible, with only family, friends and colleagues.
Moonbin’s manager discovered him dead at his apartment in Seoul in the posh Gangnam neighbourhood at around 8:10 p.m. on Wednesday. He then called the Seoul Gangnam Police Station.
And while police believe he took his own life, an autopsy is being conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
“He appears to have taken his own life but an autopsy is being reviewed to determine the exact cause of death,” police said.
Moonbin had been working as an actor and model before joining Astro in 2016 and had been performing as a duo with Sanha since 2020. The two had been on a world tour, with their last performance in Bangkok on 8 April.
Moonbin debuted as a member of Astro in 2016 under Fantagio Entertainment. He quickly gained a following for his impressive dance skills and charming personality.
Moonbin was not only a talented performer but also a beloved member of the K-pop community.
Fans and fellow artists alike have been expressing their condolences and sharing their memories of Moonbin on social media.
Recall he had posted messages on social media to his fans, he said; “I want to confess one thing, I’m feeling really bad. There might have been a lot of signs which people could notice since the concert started, so I’m also very sorry to you guys.
“I’m working out and trying to pick up things that I’ve left little by little. I chose this job so I need to be happy so that I can make fans happy as well,” he said in a live broadcast over social media.
The cause of Moonbin’s passing has not been officially announced by his agency, but reports suggest that he passed away due to suspected suicide.
Fans around the world have been devastated by the news of his passing and have been expressing their grief on social media using the hashtag #RestInPeaceMoonbin.
On Thursday, a number of K-pop groups in South Korea announced that they would reschedule or postpone upcoming performances. One was Moon Sua, the younger sister of Moonbin, who is a part of the female group Billlie, which has seven members.
In the wake of Moonbin’s passing, it is important to remember the impact that he had on the K-pop industry and the joy that he brought to his fans.
Moonbin will always be remembered for his talent, his kindness, and his dedication to his craft.
It is a sad reality that a number of K-pop idols have passed away from suicide in recent years. One of the most well-known cases is that of SHINee’s Jonghyun, who took his own life in December 2017.
Moonbin’s death is the latest in a series of K-pop stars who have passed away in recent years.
Singer and actress Goo Hara was found dead at her home in Seoul in 2019. Her close friend, K-pop star Sulli, killed herself after a long struggle with online bullying in the same year.
Minwoo of boy band 100% died at home, in 2018, with his label only saying he had suffered cardiac arrest, Jonghyun, the lead singer of SHINee, one of South Korea’s biggest boy bands died in 2017.
Another tragic loss was that of Goo Hara, a former member of the girl group KARA, who died in November 2019.
Sulli, a former member of the girl group f(x), also passed away from suicide in October 2019.
In addition, there have been other cases of K-pop trainees or lesser-known idols who have died from suicide, highlighting the intense pressure and scrutiny that can come with the industry.
The K-pop community continues to mourn these losses and work towards creating a healthier and more supportive environment for its artists.
