The “House of Cards” star faced accusations of multiple acts of sexual misconduct involving four men spanning from 2001 to 2013. Following a four-week trial at Southwark Crown Court in London, the case also saw popular singer Elton John taking the stand as a defence witness.
Throughout the trial, the Oscar-winning actor maintained his plea of “not guilty” and strongly contended that his accusers were merely seeking financial gain through false claims.
After more than 12 hours of deliberation, the jury rendered a ‘not guilty’ verdict on Wednesday, as reported by Daily Mail.
The trial cleared Spacey of seven counts of sexual assault, one count of causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent, and one count of causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent.
Emotional upon hearing the verdict, Spacey delivered a speech expressing his gratitude to the jury for their careful consideration of all the evidence and facts before arriving at their decision.
He stated, “I imagine that many of you can understand that there’s a lot for me to process after what has just happened today. But I would like to say that I am enormously grateful to the jury for having taken the time to examine all of the evidence and all of the facts carefully before they reached their decision.”
Expressing his humility at the outcome, Spacey also extended his thanks to the courthouse staff, security personnel, and everyone who supported him during the trial.
The allegations against Spacey first surfaced in 2017 when fellow Hollywood actor Anthony Rapp accused him of making sexual advances during a party in 1986 while Rapp was intoxicated. Rapp filed a lawsuit in 2020, but Spacey was deemed “not liable” for the claims in 2022.
