Before considering the best non-dairy milk substitutes for lactose-intolerant persons, let’s consider what it means to be lactose intolerant.

Lactose Intolerance is the inability of the body to break down lactose, the natural sugar in milk and dairy products. This digestive disorder is caused by the shortage of lactase in the body, an enzyme produced by the small intestine needed for the body to digest lactose.

Rather than properly break down this lactase, the body rejects it, causing digestive issues like bloating, diarrhoea and cramps. While there is no treatment for lactose intolerance, one’s best treatment is to avoid lactose-free foods. But since milk and other dairy products are a great source of calcium in the body, how do you get enough calcium in your diet without any pain.

These are five non-dairy milk substitutes to help you avoid lactose intolerance symptoms.

  • Almond Milk

Low calorie and highly nutritious, almond milk is a great alternative for lactose intolerant individuals. It is also a great source of vitamin E and D and contains anti0inflammatory properties, making it an even healthier choice.

  • Coconut Milk

Loaded with many benefits, coconut milk also contains anti-inflammatory properties that allow it to support weight loss and improve metabolism. Prepared from the sweet coconut flesh, you can be sure of the great taste of this milk.

  • Soy Milk

Rich in protein, sugar-free soy milk is an excellent choice for a better protein intake. Soy milk is also a good source of vitamin B, potassium and iron.

  • Oat milk

Oat milk is slightly sweet to taste and has a creamy texture. It is highly rich in fibre and great for managing cholesterol levels.

  • Rice milk

While a good non-dairy milk substitute for lactose-intolerant persons, rice milk contains more carbs than other non-dairy milk.

Remember that this advice doesn’t substitute for medical information, and before choosing any of these milk substitutes, be sure first to seek qualified medical opinion from your doctor.
