Make Everyday A Mandela Day
“It is in your hands to make the world a better place.”
– Nelson Mandela
Mandela Day is a global call to action that celebrates the idea that each individual has the power to transform the world, the ability to make an impact. It is not meant as a public holiday, but as a day to honour the legacy of Nelson Mandela.
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, international peacemaker, politician, philanthropist and former President of South Africa. He died in December 2013. For 67 years Nelson Mandela devoted his life to the service of humanity in the fields of conflict resolution, race relations, volunteering, the promotion and protection of human rights, reconciliation, gender equality and the rights of children and other vulnerable groups, as well as the fight against poverty and the promotion of social justice.
Nelson Mandela International Day (or Mandela Day) is an annual international day in honour of Nelson Mandela, celebrated each year on 18 July, Mandela’s birthday, after the day was officially declared by the United Nations in November 2009. Every Mandela Day, the UN asks individuals around the world to mark Nelson Mandela International Day by making a difference in their communities. Everyone has the ability and the responsibility to change the world for the better, and Mandela Day is an occasion for everyone to take necessary action.
The Nelson Mandela Foundation is dedicating this year’s Mandela Day to Action Against Poverty, honouring Nelson Mandela’s leadership and devotion to fighting poverty and promoting social justice for all. This day can serve to bring together people around the world to fight poverty and promote peace, reconciliation and cultural diversity. It starts with 67 minutes.
Mandela Day calls on us all, every day, to make the world a better place. Each year on 18 July we look back on what has been done, and forward to what will be done. Making every day a Mandela Day celebrates Madiba’s life and legacy in a sustainable way that will bring about enduring change. No matter how small your action, endeavour to take action, inspire change, and make everyday a Mandela Day.
