Disney’s highly anticipated live-action film, Mufasa: The Lion King, has had a triumphant box office debut, earning ₦64 million during its opening weekend.

The performance crowns it as the highest-grossing Hollywood film of the weekend and the strongest live-action opening of 2024.

Meanwhile, Toyin Abraham’s Alakada Bad and Boujee made waves in the Nollywood scene, debuting with ₦58 million, making it the second-highest-grossing Nollywood title for the weekend.

The actress and filmmaker also expressed her heartfelt gratitude to fans for their support, which helped the film break records in the Alakada franchise.

Toyin took to Instagram to celebrate the milestone, stating, “With an overwhelming outpouring of love, kindness, and compassion from fans all across the country, we were able to make this as our opening weekend figure. Thank you for watching and supporting us.” She also highlighted the film’s limited showings in cinemas, urging fans to spread the word.

Mufasa: The Lion King, distributed by FilmOne Entertainment, explores the early life of the iconic lion, delving into how Mufasa rose to become the revered king of the Pride Lands. Fans of the original The Lion King (1994) and the 2019 live-action adaptation have flocked to cinemas, drawn by the film’s captivating storytelling and visual appeal.
While Alakada Bad and Boujee brought the humour and drama Nollywood fans adore, Mufasa: The Lion King roared louder, cementing its position as the weekend’s biggest cinematic success.
