Madonna, in her first show, took a moment to address the serious health scare that had previously postponed the tour’s scheduled start over the summer. She attributed her recovery and strength to her children, Lourdes (27), Rocco (23), David (18), Mercy (17), and twins Stella and Estere (11), after her hospitalization in June due to a bacterial infection.
She shared her thoughts on stage at The O2 arena, saying, “I forgot five years of my life, or my death — I don’t really know where I was. But the angels were protecting me, and my children were there. And my children always save me every time. If you want to know my secret and how I pulled through and survived, I thought, ‘I have to be there for my children. I have to survive for them.'”
Gloria Gaynor expressed her approval of Madonna performing her iconic hit, which spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1979. She took to social media to congratulate Madonna on the launch of the Celebration Tour and expressed her joy that Madonna is in good health and ready to connect with fans worldwide.
Madonna’s tour continues with two more dates in London on October 17 and 18 before moving across Europe. She will return to The O2 for two more shows on December 5 and 6.
