Giddy drum percussions open up Olubunmi Adeyeye’s “Incomparable God”, the first track on her recent EP, Emerge. The nostalgic intro befits a traditional Christian worship song, with the drum rolls seeping into a vocal section that spotlights Adeyeye’s sonorous singing. With basslines hitting her uptempo melismas (where she stretches her vocal notes), the melodies unfurl as both airy and solemn. “Yes! You are incomparable/ Yes you are Lord,” she chants, in synergy with female backing vocals, helming the record into a slow-burn cadence that immerses the overall message into the listener. She flips the pace midway into the song, “Matchless in all your ways/ Perfect in all you do/ You are Lord!” rousing the song’s overall momentum into a high-pitched anthem that evokes strong emotion.

Adeyeye’s delivery in “Incomparable God” blends uniquely with the song’s composition, with a sweltering piano, guitar and drum progression that serenade her charged renditions with a near electronic feel that’s common across gospel worship compositions in Nigeria. Think Sinach or Tope Alabi, and you have a fair sense of her tonal synergy, one where her singing voice is underlined and phrased with equally dramatic instrumentation.

In the EP’s second track, “Oluwa, Ayin O”, she employs this chant-esque singing style again, inducing an extra layer of call-and-response where she channels the song’s supplicative energy. With the subtle “Eseun O!” response, she chant-sings different salutations to God, ultimately recording a gratitude-soaked worship track that feels relatable and sincere. The song glides with a unique cadence that helps drive easier recall.

And in the closing track, ‘Jesus, Jesus’, Adeyeye unlocks a ballad-style twist, relying on sombre piano chords to preach her gospel of God’s divine healing and mercy. Like in the other songs, Adeyeye masterfully commands the use of backing vocals to layer the song with extra melodic depth. The catharsis from this choice is unmistakable; the record instantly feels like a group worship session, allowing listeners to participate seamlessly when listening to the song.

Across the entire EP, Adeyeye’s lyrical emphasis, especially with scat singing and melismas, strengthens her delivery. It connects as an intimate playlist, with heartfelt melodies inducing shock value in each record. She keeps the record spinning with a tight-knit cadence that moves from slow-burn to mid-tempo, pulsing every moment with a sacred/sombre feel that highlights her worship-focused artistry.

A standout track from the playlist is the evergreen intro, ‘Incomparable God’, which showcases her strong range of melodies with her countertenor strong suit. The chants across the EP, as well as her profound messaging, also butter the hypermelodic instrumentations with more catharsis. It’s safe to say Adeyeye is an expert at creating melodies that evoke strong emotion, while the EP’s cohesive feel drives up its replay value.

Ultimately, Adeyeye’s Emerge is an alluring playlist that spotlights the beauty of Nigerian worship gospel, with local percussion, standout improvisations, and brilliant use of singing techniques to keep it both enjoyable and introspective. It’s perfectly suited for large worship ministries and also private listening, ranking stealthily as one of Adeyeye’s best works so far. A solid 7.5/10.
