The range of talented releases across Afrobeats’ emerging class continues to stun this writer on a weekly basis. One of such intriguing finds this week is the melancholia-laden heartbreak song dubbed “Loner” by fast-rising newcomer C Flex. “I only get one life to live,” C Flex’s booming tenor opens the song, with bubbly piano chords dotting the first melodic section.

Interestingly, the heartbreak R&B-pop anthem arrives as C Flex’s stirring comeback, after a brief hiatus that trailed his 2022 opus, “Hypocrisy”, and it spins as the singer’s most mature melodic evolution till date.

In “Loner”, C Flex opens up about his experiences with finding and sustaining a love interest, after surviving past traumas. “Let nobody stress me/ I don’t want no company/ Can you please just let me be,” he sings with rousing melismas. The song’s catchy lyricism, code-switching from English to Pidgin, comes off with strong relatability and simplicity that boosts recall. “Bad man like me dey in the zone/ Switch off my phone, I dey airplane mode,” his textured vocals reverberate through the song, achieving lyrical emphasis, with strong emotion and intonation. The entire record feels like a therapy session between a heartbroken romantic and their bosom friend who’s trying to egg them on to another romantic relationship.

C Flex’s cathartic delivery also shines through as one of the record’s lowest-hanging fruits. With a dynamic pacing where the song spins off with a slow-burn rhythm that builds momentum from the first verse into its bridge, chorus, and supporting verses, C Flex’s delivery rings as a punchy, painful and pessimistic pop jive. His counterpoint between his backing vocals and main vocals also rings with a clear tonal balance that allows the listener to soak in the harmonies easily. Save from the flatlined scat singing where he echoes the ‘Yeah’ in the second verse precisely, “I know say I dey snooze/ But I no get anything to lose (yeahhhh),” and some other off-key moments around the lines, “Make nobody stress me/ I don’t want no company”, C Flex’s delivery enlivens the song with lucid emotions, adding to its vibrant tension-and-release, as well as tonal balance.

The instrumentation on “Loner” also stands out with a poignant meld of Amapiano log drums, Afrobeats percussion, and emo-pop chord progressions. C Flex breezes through the song’s melodic sections, with a vibrant cadence that brings out the dancey groove, while creating room for a feel-good groove, especially at the song’s intro and climax, where his melancholic scat singing echoes the pain in his message. Its scat singing refrain and cliff-hanging descrescendo bolster the replay’s value. While the song’s production could have showcased a more complex or diverse composition, especially with the drab percussion monotone it houses, its seamless audio mix shrouds its weak points.

Overall, the record rings through as a stealthy release which showcases C Flex’s heartfelt vocalisation, blending it with a groovy composition that soars with emotional duality and relatable storytelling. While the song drifts without any shock value, the entire record stands out with replay value and an overarching enjoyability that keeps it among the crop of noteworthy releases across Afrobeats’ talented subways.
