The Global University of Science and Technology, based in Delaware in the US, has conferred an Honorary Doctorate in Music on Nigerian gospel artist and minister, Lilian Nneji, in recognition of her contribution to gospel music and ministry.
The award, dated 5 October, was approved on the recommendation of the university’s International Collegiate Council. According to the institution, the honorary degree acknowledges Nneji’s consistent efforts in promoting gospel music and inspiring faith through her work.
Responding to the honour, Nneji expressed gratitude to God, describing the recognition as a testament to divine grace and perseverance.
“For me, it is simply an honour God himself orchestrated,” she said. “Indeed, hard work pays and patience is a virtue everyone must have. The grace of God brought me this far.”
Popularly known for her song Meriwo, Meriwo, Nneji said her passion for gospel music is rooted in her love and knowledge of God, which she described as her constant motivation.
“The love and knowledge of God are what keep driving me to do what I do,” she said.
She also encouraged younger gospel artists to remain steadfast in their calling, urging them to trust in God’s timing and guidance. “To the younger generation who do what I do, I would say — always remember that God is in the journey. Trust the process,” she added.
The honorary degree adds to Nneji’s growing recognition as one of Nigeria’s prominent voices in gospel music, known for her uplifting messages and long-standing ministry in worship and performance.
