Afrocentric cultural collective, WeTalkSound, has been selected to join the Apple Music Curators’ Programme.

The announcement was made in a statement on Friday by WeTalkSound, confirming that the group will curate editorial playlists showcasing Africa’s diverse and evolving sounds, with Afrobeats at the centre.

According to the collective, its first set of playlists on Apple Music will feature a wide mix of genres, from street pop and African RnB to electronic dance.

Head of Operations at WeTalkSound, Dunsin Bankole, described the recognition as a big step for the African music scene.
“Joining the Apple Music Curator program is a huge milestone, not just for WeTalkSound but for African music culture as a whole. We’re excited to bring our curatorial voice to a global platform and spotlight the sounds, artists, and communities shaping the future of African music,” he said.

The playlists released by WeTalkSound include Street Frequency (African Street Music), Afromantic (Afro R&B), House on Fire (Afro House), Hot Drops (Afrobeats/Afro Pop), Eve (Female Artists), and Time Machine (Nostalgia).

Observers say the development shows how global streaming platforms are now depending on African curators to project authentic perspectives of the continent’s music to the world.
