The increasing lurking danger in our beauty and skin care products has us checking around for harmful chemicals and ingredients that can hamper on our skin and health. It is becoming more apparent that government standards offer loopholes in allowing potentially dangerous ingredients to be used in consumer products and even offer them the ability to be marketed as “healthy” or “natural.” But anyways, here is to help your skin stay healthy amidst all the influx. Things to look out for when next you are shopping your beauty products include:

Sulfates: Before you purchase an item, read the labels thoroughly and look out for substances that include dodecyl sodium sulfate, lauryl ether sulfate, and even sodium salt. Both sodium laureth sulfate and sodium lauryl sulfate are used as a lathering agent. Sodium Laureth sulfate sometimes referred to as (SLES) is a substance used in cosmetics as a detergent also to make products bubbles. Both ingredients are corrosive to the skin. They are a leading cause of skin irritation, hair loss and can even lead to permanent face scars.

Synthetic Fragrance: Manufacturers mostly use the term “fragrance” to protect trade secrets. This also allow them to mask a wide variety of undisclosed ingredients in creams, perfumes, foundations, moisturizer, powders and a lot of other beauty products. These endocrine disrupters mimic hormones may alter genital development. They contain phthalates; pronounced (Thay-lates), synthetic chemicals commonly used to stabilize fragrances and make plastic more pliable. Look out for products labeled as unscented that say no fragrances added, “phthalate free,” or do not have “fragrance” listed as an ingredient before you can purchase.

Petrochemicals:  Products that contain this substance can blog the pores and also form a barrier that would prevent the skin from breathing. It can cause pimples and major skin infections. These petroleum-based ingredients are derived from crude oil. They include petrolatum, mineral oil, and paraffin.

Triclosan: This can be found in antibacterial soaps and dental products as well. It may have negative effects on the endocrine system and has been associated with allergies. Look out for products that don’t have triclosan when shopping for your detergents or dental products. Also, don’t use anti-bacteria products except when crucial.

Parabens: According to research, parabens are a class of widely used preservatives in cosmetics and pharmaceutical products. Parabens can cause skin irritation; dermatitis and rosacea in individuals with sensitive skin types. It can also increase the risk of cancer. Studies indicate that methylparaben applied on the skin may react with UVB leading to increased skin aging and DNA damage. They can disrupt hormonal functions  Look out for label description such as; Methylparaben, propylparaben, isoparaben, and butylparaben. If you see it on the label, please don’t buy the product.

Synthetic Polymers: These come from petroleum and give thickness to skincare products. They are highly processed toxic by-products. Look out for sodium polyacrylate and carbomer on the label.
