Legendary Nigerian hip-hop group Ruff Rugged & Raw is set to make a comeback into the industry with a new album.

The duo made the announcement this morning, stated in a Twitter post that they would be “hitting the studio for another album”:

“And yesterday it was confirmed to me that for sure we will be hitting the studio for another album….. For our people. Signed and sealed. PAUL PLAY.”

It appears the upcoming album would be produced by music legend Paul Play Dairo, son of late legendary juju singer, I.K Dairo. Paul signed the duo to Playground Entertainment label and he eventually produced a number of their songs, including “Kasala Go Burst” and the classic smash single “Wetin Dey” in the early 2000s.

People familiar with the Nigerian hip-hop industry would recall that Ruff Rugged & Raw made their entry onto the music scene in the early 90s. The 90s saw the emergence of a new school of hip hop acts such as The Remedies, The Trybesmen (dubbed as “the Run-DMC of Africa”), female rapper Weird MC, and Plantashun Boiz.

Ruff Rugged & Raw was formed in 1990. The group is made up of two brothers, “B-RITE” (Kingsley Ayovunaduo) and “HANGMAN” (David Ayovunaduo), a third member, “JAY GANGSTA,” left in 2000.

The group came out of Festac Town in an era when the town boasted of some of Nigeria’s hottest acts such as TuFace, Azadus, Blackface and many more.
