MTV announced today that Colombian superstar Shakira will be honored with the Video Vanguard Award at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards. The award is given to artists who have made significant contributions to the music video medium.

Shakira is a global icon with over 60 million records sold worldwide. She has won three Grammy Awards, nine Latin Grammy Awards, and a Golden Globe Award. Her music videos have been viewed billions of times online.
Some of Shakira’s most iconic music videos include “Hips Don’t Lie,” “Whenever, Wherever,” and “La Tortura.” Her videos are known for their stunning visuals, catchy dance moves, and powerful messages.
“Shakira is a true global force who continues to inspire and influence the masses with her unique, musical prowess,” said Bruce Gillmer, president of music talent, music programming and events at Paramount+. “She’s a trailblazer for women around the world and one of the first artists to lead the globalization of Latin music.”
In addition to receiving the Video Vanguard Award, Shakira will perform at the 2023 MTV VMAs for the first time in 17 years. The show will air live from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on September 12.
Shakira is the first South American artist to receive the Video Vanguard Award. She joins an elite group of previous recipients, including Madonna, Janet Jackson, Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Nicki Minaj.
